Boric acid (INN: boric acid) (orthoboric acid or *acidum boricum* or common boric acid; H3BO3) is a weak acid first prepared in 1702 by Wilhelm Homberg(wd) from borax, and is used for its antiseptic and insecticidal properties.

It is a raw material in the chemical industry. A white powder, soluble in water. Its mineral form is sassolite(wd). Other known forms are metaboric acid HBO2 and pyroboric acid or, more correctly, tetraboric acid. These acids are considered compounds of boron trioxide HBO3 and water.
